Athens

Athens, the capital city of Greece, is one of the world's oldest cities with a history that dates back nearly 3000 year ago. Athens has a strong historical, cultural and artistic heritage that is evident from the landmarks we see today. Athens is not only a bustling cosmopolitan metropolis, but is in a sense Greece's economic, financial and political centre.

Athens has become a tourist hot spot. Landmarks viewed as important in Athens, of which there are numerous, include the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Acropolis, the Temples of Hephaestus, the Parthenon and the Agora. Due to having such remarkable archaeological sites at disposal , the city has become one of the world's main centres of archaeological research. The city hosts such important institutions such as the Athens University, the Archaeological Society, several important archaeological museums and many others.

The city boasts many important museums with various exhibitions. Some of these museums include the Benaki Museum Pireos Annexe, Museum of Cycladic & Ancient Greek Art, Museum of Greek Folk Art, the National Archeological Musuem, the National Gardens.

Athens is divided into many districts, each having some unique to share with its visitor. Some of the more prominent districts include Omonia, Psirri and Gazi, Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, Thission, Kolonaki and Exarcheia.

There is much to enjoy around the hustle and bustle of the city such as enlivened outdoor cafes and parks. The historic centre, prominent sites and the entertainment areas are all close at hand, making Athens perfect for walking.
