Cologne

Germans say about Cologne that it is the "warmest of the cold", in many aspects. With over 2000 years of history, it belongs among the oldest cities in Germany. It has grown to be one of Europe's largest metropolitan areas. The city is situated along the Rhine River and is home to one of the oldest European universities - the University of Cologne.

Like Cologne's German counterparts, the city has a lot to offer in the way of culture and entertainment. But more than the others it is known first and foremost as a city of the arts. Cologne boasts over thirty museums and literally hundreds of galleries. It hosts exhibitions that range from archeological sites to modern art. Some museums to visit include the Romisch-Germanisches Museum, Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Museum Ludwig and the EL-DE Haus, a cold remembrance of the happenings of the Second World War.

The center of Cologne was utterly destroyed during the Second World War and much of the reconstruction that later took place mimics the style of the fifties. In regard to churches, Cologne boasts many important landmarks including the Cologne Cathedral, twelve Romanesque Churches.

Cologne has become quite famous for its beer called Kolsch. The city is also well known for the Cologne carnival that takes place every 11 November and lasts until Ash Wednesday. It was one of the largest street festivals in Europe. It is one of those cities overflowing with diversity, thus making it quite unique.
