Prague
"The mother of cities", "the golden city" or "the city of hundred spires". These are some of the most popular designations referred to one of the most magical cities in the world. It is located in central Bohemia on the banks of the Vltava river. The population of Prague is about 1.2 million and it ranks 12th among the richest regions in the EU. Despite of the good standard of living a curious fact is that the GDP per capita in Prague is twice higher than the average for the rest of the Czech Republic. Prices are generally still lower than in most western countries in Europe. The beauty of the city is somewhat mystical and history explains it. The area has been inhabited ever since the Paleolithic age. The city itself was founded - according to the legend, by the princess Lubise and her husband. They built a castle on the right bank of the river and the castle was called Visehrad. It survives today and is opposite the famous Prague castle, which was built on the left bank. Prague castle was announced by the Guinness Records as the biggest ancient castle in the world.
Prague is an amazing ensemble of various architectural styles. It was a gate between the east and the west of Europe and carried along the centuries the fragrant touch of supra-national inspiration. Baroque, neo-classicism, art nouveau, renaissance, gothic, ultra-modernism, etc. - it has it all in a magical combination. Some of the most fascinating sites in town are the Old Town, which was included in UNESCO’s world heritage, the Astronomical Clock, the New Town and the busy historical Wenceslas Square, the Lesser Quarter formerly inhabited by the German citizens of Prague, the Lennon Wall - a symbol of the rebellion of young idealists during (and after) the communist regime.
